Water Sub-Metering

Our fixed and clamp-on water meters are well-suited for submetering for water. Micronics offer a comprehensive range of water meters, utilising ultrasonic clamp-on technology to deliver significant benefits over traditional inline products including lower installation cost and dry servicing benefits.

The clamp–on water meter is a device used to measure the flow rate of water in pipes. Installed by attaching it to the outside of the pipe, rather than cutting into the pipe, making it a non–invasive solution. The device uses ultrasonic technology to measure the flow rate of water and can be used with a variety of pipe materials, including plastic, steel and cast iron.

What Are Water Submeters?

Water sub metering uses devices used to measure the amount of water consumption by individual tenants or households in multi-unit buildings, such as apartment blocks. They allow for the precise measurement of water usage and the billing of each individual unit, as opposed to a single, overall bill for the entire building. This system provides a more equitable and accurate way of distributing the cost of water consumption, as each unit is only responsible for their own usage.

The installation of water submeters is becoming increasingly common as a means of reducing water waste and improving conservation efforts. They allow for real-time monitoring of water usage, which enables residents to be more mindful of their consumption and take steps to reduce their usage if necessary. In addition, submeters provide valuable data to building owners and managers, who can use this information to identify potential leaks and make necessary repairs, reducing waste and saving money on water bills.

Water submeters typically consist of a meter that is installed in each unit, as well as a central system for tracking and recording the usage of each one. The meter measures the volume of water passing through it and sends the information to the central system, where it is recorded and used for billing purposes. The central system can be configured to send alerts when usage exceeds a certain threshold, allowing building owners and managers to quickly identify and address any potential issues.

Submeters are often installed in older buildings that lack individual meters, as well as in newer buildings where water conservation is a priority. They are typically required by local regulations, and the installation process is typically handled by a licensed plumber or contractor. Some submeters are installed in the main water line of each unit, while others are installed at the point of use, such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Submeters encourage residents to be more mindful of their consumption and take steps to reduce their usage. This can result in significant water savings, particularly in areas where water is scarce or in high demand.

CASE STUDY

Bristol Water

Bristol Water has supplied drinking water for over 167 years and serves a population of 1.1 million people and all the associated businesses in an area of 2,400 square kilometres (1,000 square miles) centred on Bristol. In order to be able to monitor its flow, hundreds of flow meters are permanently installed across the business in treatment works, pumping stations and the distribution infrastructure.

TESTIMONIAL

“Because mechanical parts do not need to be inserted through the pipe wall or to protrude into the flow system, installation took just a few minutes and there was no need to shut down flow or drain the system, making it extremely cost effective and practical.”
