Micronics flowmeter measures water flow in pipes for Scottish hospital

The Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank, Scotland used a Micronics Portaflow 330 flowmeter to measure the water flow through hot and cold water pipes throughout the estate. Andrew Gallagher, NHS Scotland’s Estates Officer discovered the Portaflow 330 through a simple web search and has been very satisfied with his discovery. “I initially chose it because it meant that there was no need to cut into pipes – vital in a busy hospital – which, in turn meant that installation costs were minimal because the system did not need to be drained down or pipes cut into. We have found the accuracy of the data delivered to be excellent.”

The specialist Micronics product, used for clean liquid monitoring, with its integral logger and software and non-invasive measurement represented significant savings on installation costs and less disruption than when installing an alternative in-line meter. The Micronics clamp-on flowmeter for liquids is portable and easy to use and offers continuity and long term reliability. It is robustly constructed and provides a quick and reliable means of measuring flow accurately. This device is very simple to use – there is no overhead for additional fittings, plant modification, or retro-fit expenditure. Also there is no contact with fluid so there is no risk of contamination of the process fluid and possible exposure of the monitoring equipment to corrosive or toxic liquids, which is obviously crucial in a hospital. It takes just a few minutes to install and there is no need to shut down flow or drain the system. This was particularly relevant in the busy hospital, which operates 24 hours a day. With its easy to follow menu it proved to be a cost-effective alternative to a traditional in-line meter installation.

The Golden Jubilee is home to regional and national heart and lung services, and is a major centre for orthopaedics. It has approximately 230 patient beds and 16 theatres and is the only hospital to carry our heart transplants in Scotland.
