Micronics heatmeter specified by Local Authority to measure heat used on district heating system
An Essex-based family business that has been providing both the private and public sectors with mechanical and electrical services for over thirty years used a Micronics U1000 heatmeter to measure the amount of heat used on a local authority’s district heating system. This cost-effective alternative to a traditional in-line meter was specified by Kent Group Services Ltd’s Local Authority client. A district heating system distributes heat generated in a centralized location through a system of pipes for residential and commercial heating and can provide higher efficiencies and better pollution control than localized boilers. It is therefore crucial to accurately measure the heat generated so the Micronics unit was ideal for this purpose.
Paul Kent, a Director of Kent Group was satisfied with the specification. “The U1000 is a quick and reliable flow measurement solution. It was specified because it takes just a few minutes to install. There was no need to cut into pipes which, in turn meant that installation costs were minimal because the system did not need to be drained down or pipes cut into. It is configured for pipe size so there is nominal configuration on site. Because you don’t need to drain down during operation or servicing, costly and disruptive downtime is kept to a minimum, an important consideration for local authorities whose budgets are constantly under pressure.”
The U1000 is a transit time ultrasonic heat/energy meter designed to work with clamp on transducers, to provide accurate heat measurement, without the need for any mechanical parts to be inserted through the pipe wall or to protrude into the system. It takes just a few minutes to install as there is no need to shut down flow or drain the system. It uses ultrasound to measure flow rate and PT100 temperature sensors to measure flow and return temperatures. The reliable unit displays energy rate and totalised energy with pulse output and communication options, so it can be used as a standalone meter or as an integral part of an aM&T or BEM’s system. It is particularly straightforward to install with no specialist skills or tools required. And operation is simplicity itself – after power is connected and the pipe inside diameter entered, the sensors are adjusted and the pipe clamped on.
