Micronics Doppler Flow Meter used to measure flow in sludge treatment plant
A Micronics UF D5000 was used by Aqua Enviro, a leading environmental consultancy in the water, wastewater and organic waste sectors to measure the flow of potable water sludge through a transfer main to a treatment plant in January 2015. This was part of capital works to design a site upgrade.
Rowland Minall, Aqua Enviro’s Operations’ Manager did an internet search for a robust flow meter that could cope with high solids water. The Micronics unit is a non-contacting Doppler flow meter that gives accurate measurement from outside the pipe, meaning there was no requirement to cut into the pipes and no contact is made with the liquid. Installation is simple as there is no need to shut down the pipe. There is no fouling or scale build-up on the sensor. It is recommended for full pipes and any fluid that contains solids or bubbles so it was ideal for use in the selected location.
Operation is very straightforward. The UF D5000 strap-on sensor is mounted on the outside of a plastic or metal pipe 12.7 mm in diameter or larger. To measure flow, an acoustic signal is reflected back to the sensor from moving particles or gas bubbles suspended in the fluid. Designed for problematic liquids, it works best in applications that would defeat most contacting flow meters. Because the sensor is mounted on the outside of the pipe, it is unaffected by abrasives or harsh chemicals and there is no obstruction to flow and no pressure drop. It measures flow in PVC, carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, fiberglass and lined pipes; indeed any pipe material that conducts ultrasound.
Rowland Minall has been more than satisfied with the Micronics unit. “It works very well with dirty water and sludge. It is reliable, simple to use and accurate. We have used the unit on several occasions in treatment plants across the UK.”
