Micronics flowmeter used to monitor chilled water for scanner at major London Hospital
In February 2016 Comfort Controls used a Micronics U1000 to monitor the flow rate of a process chiller for the Royal Marsden Hospital. The hospital rely on the chiller to keep their scanner cool and could not countenance a breakdown. They called in Comfort Controls to offer a solution. Kris Mitchell, Comfort Controls’ Technical Director had used Micronics products in the past and believed that the U1000 would be the ideal solution for the hospital’s needs. Comfort Control’s goal is to create energy efficient buildings that are safe, sustainable and beneficial to the occupants. This is achieved by carefully managing the balance between the users’ requirements and their energy consumption.
The Hemel Hempstead based company regulates and monitors heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, typically controlling 60-80% of a building’s energy usage so it was crucial to obtain reliable flow measurements.
The U1000 flowmeter offers a quick and reliable flow measurement solution. These excellent flowmeters are configured for pipe size so only nominal configuration on site is required, minimising intervention – vital in a busy hospital. The easy to follow menu made it a very cost-effective alternative to traditional in-line meters. Furthermore, dry servicing is possible so that downtime is kept to a minimum which is especially important for the smooth running of the site.
The Micronics unit helped Comfort Controls comply with the Climate Change Act 2008. By applying a range of control and monitoring routines the building services are operated in strict accordance with demand, thereby avoiding unnecessary use of energy, a requirement of the Act, which is a legally binding framework aiming to tackle the dangers of climate change with the target of an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Kris Mitchell was pleased that the Micronics unit operated well and was very straightforward to set up. He would definitely use it again and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others with a similar need.
