Non Contact Flow Meters
A non contact flow meter measures the movement of liquid inside a pipe without ever touching the fluid. Instead of being inserted into the line, the sensors are fixed to the outside of the pipe. What is a Non Contact Flow Meter?
Because of this non-invasive approach, these meters are often described as clamp-on flow meters or non-invasive flow meters. They are a popular choice where pipework must remain sealed, or where downtime and maintenance costs need to be kept to a minimum.
How They Work
Non contact flow meters usually rely on ultrasonic technology. By transmitting sound waves through the pipe wall and measuring the way they are altered by the liquid moving inside, the meter calculates flow velocity.
There are two main approaches: one uses the difference in travel time of signals sent with and against the flow, while the other measures the frequency shift from reflections within the liquid. Together, these methods cover a wide range of applications, from clean water systems to liquids containing bubbles or suspended solids.
