Non Contact Flow Meters

A non contact flow meter measures the movement of liquid inside a pipe without ever touching the fluid. Instead of being inserted into the line, the sensors are fixed to the outside of the pipe. Using ultrasonic signals, the device can track flow speed and volume without any need for cutting, drilling or interrupting supply.

Micronics offers a comprehensive choice of clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters, from portable survey tools to fixed installation systems:

What is a Non Contact Flow Meter?

Because of this non-invasive approach, these meters are often described as clamp-on flow meters or non-invasive flow meters. They are a popular choice where pipework must remain sealed, or where downtime and maintenance costs need to be kept to a minimum.

How They Work

Non contact flow meters usually rely on ultrasonic technology. By transmitting sound waves through the pipe wall and measuring the way they are altered by the liquid moving inside, the meter calculates flow velocity.

There are two main approaches: one uses the difference in travel time of signals sent with and against the flow, while the other measures the frequency shift from reflections within the liquid. Together, these methods cover a wide range of applications, from clean water systems to liquids containing bubbles or suspended solids.

Why Choose Non Invasive Flow Measurement?

The greatest strength of clamp-on meters is that they can be fitted without disturbing the process. This makes them ideal for retrofits on existing systems, or for situations where cutting into pipework would be disruptive, expensive or unsafe.

They also require very little maintenance, since there are no moving parts in contact with the liquid. This reduces the risk of wear, fouling or contamination, which is particularly valuable in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, water treatment and energy management.

Typical Applications

Non contact flow meters are widely used in:

– Building services for heating and cooling circuits
– Water and wastewater management
– Energy monitoring in district heating and cooling networks
– Chemical and process industries where fluids may be hazardous
– Survey and commissioning work, using portable clamp-on models

Reliable Measurement Without Pipework Disruption

Whether for permanent monitoring or short-term measurement, non contact flow meters provide a practical solution where accuracy, safety and minimal disruption are priorities. With flexible clamp-on designs and proven ultrasonic technology, they make flow monitoring simpler, cleaner and more efficient across a wide range of industries.
